The Joint CMS Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation Program is comprised of student-athletes from Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges and offers a comprehensive program of regular physical education, intramural, recreational, club and varsity sports. CMS varsity teams compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), as a member of NCAA Division III. The Program is comprised of 21 varsity sports (10 men’s, 11 women’s) and supports a student population of over 3,200 and a student-athlete population of approximately 530.

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

The Athletic Trainer will assist in supervising the athletic training room operation and will work with both male and female sports as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer. The Athletic Trainer is an asset to the physical, emotional, and social welfare; is a part of a safe environment for student-athletes; and actively participates as a member of the larger healthcare team. The Athletic Trainer works with the Head Athletic Trainer, strength coach, head coaches, other athletic trainers, and student-athletes with the development and maintenance of rehabilitative and conditioning programs and contributes to an atmosphere of professional, caring, and competent treatment of student-athletes.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Reporting to the Head Athletic Trainer, the Athletic Trainer works independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

 

  • Determine a student-athlete’s ability to practice or compete, under the direction of the Team Physician
  • Mentor Athletic Training Students and student aides
  • Consult with coaches to discuss weight training, practice plans, and athlete injuries and return to practice/play
  • Cover practices, home and away competitions and other events as assigned
  • Coordinate assigned sports/athlete preventive and rehabilitative treatments under the supervision of the Head Certified Athletic Trainer and Team Physicians
  • Assist with student-athlete physical evaluations and arrange for medical referrals when necessary
  • Assist in the maintenance of student-athlete health/injury records
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with provisions and regulations of the NCAA, SCIAC, OSHA, HIPPA, FERPA, and the institution’s policies and procedures
  • Report any compliance issues to the CMS Compliance Office regarding countable athletically-related activities (CARA), student-athlete welfare, or any other applicable NCAA rules and regulations
  • Participate in the Athletic Training Education Program as a clinical preceptor when assigned
  • Administrative duties as assigned, including, but not limited to inventory, facility maintenance, student aide scheduling, student payroll, and insurance administration.
  • Interact in a positive way with all of intercollegiate athletics, the campus and off-campus medical communities
  • Comply with all rules and guidelines set forth by the NCAA Division III, CMS Athletics, the SCIAC (Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), reporting any violations or concerns to the CMS Compliance Department.
  • Remain in good standing of all required training and certifications, including but not limited to concussion management, mental health resources, and sexual violence prevention.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS & SKILLS:

 

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology, or related field of study is required. A Master’s degree in athletic training or related field of study is preferred. Coursework must include the completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.

 

EXPERIENCE: Some collegiate work, either as an intern or work experience as an athletic trainer is required.

 

LICENCES: Must currently be NATABOC certified and be in good standing in the NATABOC. Must adhere to the NATA Professional Standards and Code of Ethics. American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR/First-Aid Certified Instructor is preferred. A valid driver’s license is required to drive College-owned vehicles and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

 

  • Deploy professional skills in athletics, athletic training, strength & conditioning, and other related fields in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College’s strategic interests.
  • Demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, and phone skills. Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments.
  • Operate computers proficiently with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook) and associated professional software such as ATS or other injury database tracking software. Use assigned technology/devices/equipment to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
  • Handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy, and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Have a thorough understanding of HIPAA and FERPA and other confidentiality statutes.
  • Prioritize and perform multiple tasks, meet deadlines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College, Athletics Dept. and Sports Medicine Dept. with a high standard of integrity and ethics, in support of the College’s strategic vision and the department’s annual goals.
  • Use exceptional organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel as needed by the department.

 

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are at least 40 hours per week, up to 7 days per week, on a variable schedule. Holiday, weekend, and evening work hours will be required. Travel will be required. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the College or division. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Student athletic trainers.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy (up to 50 lbs.). Must be physically able to demonstrate rehabilitation exercises as needed.

 

SALARY RANGE: The anticipated salary range is $68,640 to $70,000 per year. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

GROOMING AND APPEARANCE: Employees are expected to wear attire that is appropriate to the office or department in which they work.

 

BACKGROUND CHECK: The successful candidate will be required to undergo a full consumer background check. Certain positions will require the successful completion of a post-offer physical agility test.
